Weekend Makerspace Machinist, Schulich School of Engineering

Faculty Services within the Schulich School of Engineering is currently seeking a Part-time Limited Term Makerspace Machinist for approximately 12 months.
This position reports to the Technical Services, Senior Manager, of the Schulich School of Engineering. In the Maker Space Multiplex (M2), this position provides weekend (Saturday and Sunday) technical support, training, and consultation services to students. Tasks can also include supporting the training teaching assistants, students, staff, and faculty the proper handling and operating procedures of relevant engineering equipment.
This position faces rapidly changing work conditions. These conditions encompass frequent interruptions, multiple tasks, as well as periods of intense concentration and detail-oriented work. Seasonal peak periods and ongoing project work produce added stress. Work will be performed in an environment with potential dangerous situations and working with machinery with a moderate to high physical demand.
Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
Technical Support
- Act as support resource, providing expert technical assistance to stakeholders, including specialized software, tools and technology made available by the M
- Ensures stakeholder success through consultation, design advice, material selection, and manufacture (and/or facilitation of manufacture) for a wide variety of projects.
- Evaluate solution alternatives to facilitate the best and most cost effective solutions.
- Installs, configures, trains and supports new software, hardware and equipment required to meet changing needs.
- Acts as a training resource (subject matter expert) for related software, hardware, equipment, information, or processes/procedures.
- Works with other Subject Matter Experts to develop, support, or deliver training workshops for related software, hardware, equipment, information, or processes/procedures.
- Coordinate with academic staff to provide instruction and act as a resource for laboratory content of expertise-related courses.
- Develops and updates handouts, how-to guides, safety training and other training materials.
- Supervises people and activities to ensure safe and effective operation.
- Maintains facility furniture and equipment to meet dynamic usage requirements.
- Research and recommends new software, hardware, equipment, and supplies required to meet strategic needs.
Planning, Administration, and Communication
- Maintain current inventory of supplies, consumables as well as restock, ordering and disposal schedule.
- Assist with collection of data assessing the use and effectiveness of the M2 and other technology.
- Organize and plan facility dynamic furniture and equipment layouts within facilities to accommodate ever-changing usage requirements.
- Expresses a high level of understanding of the vision and capabilities of the Makerspace Multiplex, and of the requirements of students and staff.
- Takes the necessary steps to implement plans made.
- Actively participates in continuous improvement processes.
- Reports developments to Senior Technical Services Manager in order to discuss strategies.
Qualifications / Requirements:
- Journeyman Machinist with an interprovincial red seal and at least 5 years of directly related experience.
- Extensive knowledge and application of all types of machining and fabrication is required.
- Intermediate computer skills including proficiency with MS Office, SolidWorks, Fusion 360, MasterCam, Omax, internet navigation, and email.
- A strong mechanical background with the thorough working knowledge in related trades including sheet metal, welding, and carpentry is essential.
- Thorough knowledge of materials and the characteristics of metals, plastics and composites for machining and fabrication.
- Ability to multi-task and deal with multiple simultaneous priorities in an effective, efficient manner.
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
- Ability to work within a collaborative setting to set clear priorities across multiple timelines and objectives.
- Ability to develop and maintain healthy interpersonal relationships with internal and external stakeholders at all levels of the organization.
- Strong communication skills (both written and verbal), including strong listening skills and the ability to effectively speak to large groups in a teaching environment.
- Ability to perform with intense visual concentration, high dexterity, and high physical/manual activities (e.g. lifting up to 25 kg/55 lbs).
- Experience providing mentorship and guidance to apprentices, students, junior staff, Interns, and Faculty teams is desirable.
- Knowledge of the University's organization, policies, and procedures is an asset.
